Diamond Jubilee Event

We may not have been in England for the British Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, but we certainly made it feel like we were! We were so happy to have a part in planning this lovely event at Oglethorpe University for the British Consulate here in Atlanta in celebration of the Queen’s 60 years on the throne! With a beer tent set up in the middle of the proceedings, and tables and chairs set for afternoon cream teas, onlookers were able to sit and watch the Commonwealth Games, involving all sorts of traditional village fair games from welly wanging to the sack race, and from a three-legged race to a good old tug’o’war.  Teams from various Commonwealth origins got together to represent their homelands – with varying degrees of success! We were even honored by a visit from the “Queen”, who arrived in a vintage Rolls Royce and was marched in to the sounds of a Scottish pipes and drum band.  She proved to be a most agreeable and participative subject – if you look closely, you can see her getting her heels stuck in for the tug’o’war…!! And, of course, no British celebration would be complete without a nice bit of fish and chips wrapped up in a piece of newspaper, and this celebration was no different – the Fish and Chip van (the “Chippy” to us British folk) did its bit to keep everyone happy!
