Run for the Roses

Renowned for its fancy hats and mint juleps, the Kentucky Derby is one of the most popular sporting events of the year.  On the first Saturday of May, fun celebrations are held around the country in honor of what is regularly called “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”.  The stakes are high – not only a top prize in excess of a million dollars, but also the coveted blanket of roses for the winner – hence the moniker “Run for the Roses”.  For this Derby party, we wanted to recreate a little Millionaire’s Row luxe – a strong color theme, dozens of lush red roses, bold linens and classy accents.  The entrance doors, with their lucky horseshoe shaped wreaths, opened to the tall spires of Churchill Downs and rows of rose bushes.  On the chairs, cushions of red contrasted with wide black and white stripes, and highboy tables were dressed in bold linens cinched with red sashes.  On the mantel, a row of trophies stood in honor of the proud recipients.  On the buffet table, red carnation flower balls sat on black wooden pedestals and, as the centerpiece to the room, a pure black thoroughbred stood adorned with his own blanket of roses.  The party spilled out through the French doors onto a terrace decorated with festive pennant strings and julep cup centerpieces.  And, sensing an opportunity for glory, Riff Raff dressed as a jockey with his goggles and crop, and harbored dreams of victory on American Pharaoh…!
