“Here I am, send me”

There are many things that I love about what I do.  One of them is the privilege it is to get to witness and share in the celebrations of life – the birthdays, the marriages, the friends, the families – the happiest of occasions that we, frankly, so often take for granted.  Today, I got to share in another kind of celebration of life.  At a time of unconscionable loss, I realized the thing that I do, no matter how insignificant and superfluous it might sometimes seem, can help honor the beauty of a life well-lived.  There are no words to comfort her loved ones, but it was a privilege to, in some small way, ease the pain and offer a celebration of her life.  (“Here I am, send me” was the beautiful hymn she chose for us to sing for her.)
